D-Mar Construction (a company owned by a politician!) has bulldozed a Mayan pyramid at the site of Nohmul in Belize - for gravel fill to build a road. Belize is a beautiful nation in Central America, facing the Gulf of Mexico - but is small, only 350,000 or so people, and the government is limited in its ability to oversee its antiquities.  There are more ancient buildings in Belize than modern! 

Sadly this belligerent destruction may be outrageous, but it’s only one of the larger examples of desecration.  Everyday, sites are looted and/or destroyed for ceramics and other artworks to sell to collectors on the black market.
